The Story of How One Loser Became a Winner You Wont Believe What Happened Next
David didn’t dare look up. His eyes focused on a pebble lying on the ground. He felt the mocking gaze of his brothers, and his cheeks were burning hot.
David glanced at the sack of grain he was supposed to lift and carry to the house. No way was his 14-year old frame developed and strong enough for the task. He was in a no-win situation. If he obeyed and tried to lift the bag, the insults would rain down on him when he inevitably failed. But if he refused, he’d be labeled a loser and a coward.

David decided to avoid eye contact and not say a word. He hoped they would eventually get bored and leave him alone.
The Controversial Story Of Two Brothers Named 'winner' And 'loser'
“David’s a chicken. David’s a chicken.” The chant started with one voice, but soon all seven brothers repeated the words, louder and louder. Some bystanders stopped to stare. David didn’t move, but his face gradually turned a dark shade of crimson.
“You’re such a loser, ” Eliab said. “Look here.” He grabbed the sack of grain with both hands, and with one fluid motion, he swung it over his back. He was a tall, muscular man of twenty-five and had no problem carrying the heavy load. “Let’s go, guys. Let’s not waste our time any longer.”
They were gone. David took a deep breath but kept staring at the dirt, not wanting to know who else had witnessed the scene. He stood motionless for a minute, then ran his fingers through his thick and curly reddish-brown hair. He guardedly took a few steps before breaking into a sprint. He didn’t care where he was going, and tears clouded his vision anyway. All he wanted to do was get as far away as possible.

David didn’t stop to see who had spoken. He recognized the voice as one of Eliab’s friends. He increased his speed and soon dashed out the main gate, leaving Bethlehem behind. He came to a terraced olive grove and stopped. After making sure no one was around, he headed over to a tree well hidden from the path, sat down to lean against its comforting trunk, and wept. Time stood still.
With a determination that surprised even himself, David stood up and marched all the way home. Heart beating at double speed, he knocked on the heavy door.
“Hi, Mother, ” he said when she opened it for him. Relief spread through his body as he felt the tension let go of its firm grip. Maybe he could avoid seeing his brothers. “I need to talk to Father.”

David was glad his brother hadn’t found him. “Oh, you know me, I like to wander here and there … as inspiration for a poem, of course.”
“What? Going back to your beloved sheep so soon?” Abinadab said. He tried to keep his tone friendly, but there was no denying the scorn in his voice. Even his parents turned to look at him, perplexed.
David sheepishly nodded. The shepherd slapped him on the back, laughing. He then squeezed through the opening in the stone wall that surrounded the sheepfold.

David watched him go, then, with difficulty, dragged into the entrance the huge stone they used as a door. He leaned back into the wall and exhaled loudly.
“What’s wrong with me for them to hate me so much?” He petted her tenderly. “Do you think I’m a failure, too?” She stared back at him with gentle eyes. He wasn’t sure but could have sworn she shook her head.
After picking at the food, David curled up on a sheepskin by the entrance. Usually, he would fetch his harp to play. He could spend hours singing and working on his poetry, but he wasn’t in the mood. Instead, he tried unsuccessfully to fall asleep.

Dawn couldn’t come soon enough. At first sight of light, David led the flock out to pasture. Still depressed, he dragged his feet and then had to sprint to catch up to a few sheep that had wandered off. He chose a remote grazing spot where the chances of running into anyone were slim to none. Time crawled to a halt. He refused to go through his usual routine of practicing with his sling. He generally liked to challenge himself by choosing the tiniest of targets at the furthest distance possible. But not today. What’s the point? He hung his head low.

At last, it was time to return to the sheepfold. He was so downcast as he trudged along the path that he didn’t notice a sheep drift too close to the cliff near the trail. He caught sight of her just as she was about to step over the edge.
He snapped out of his reverie and dashed towards the wandering animal. With his staff, he hooked her by the neck and yanked her away from the precipice. The startled sheep bleated in horror and pain as the rest of the flock became agitated and started to disperse. David knew he had to act quickly before things got out of hand. He bellowed out a strange call that filled the air. All the sheep paused for a second, then came running in his direction and pressed up against him. He spoke gently to them as he petted their heads, trying to calm them down.

They made it to the sheepfold with no more adventures, and David dragged the massive rock into the entrance. We’re safe. He sighed.
Footsteps resounded in the distance. David paused to listen. Sure enough, they were coming his way. He knew that could mean one of two things – a servant was coming with supplies, or a robber was about to attack. David waited, sweat pouring down his face.
Two pairs of feet stopped in front of the sheepfold, which was surrounded by a six-foot-tall wall covered with thorns to discourage anyone from climbing over.

“Hey, ” a man yelled out. “Sounds like you have a lot of nice sheep in there. Just give us one of them, and we’ll be on our way.”
“We know you’re in there and that you’re just a boy.” The man snickered. “Make it easier on everyone and just give us a sheep.”

David knew he was no match for these men, but he would rather die than surrender one of his beloved animals. I guess this is it. My family won’t miss me, anyway.

The men impatiently tapped their feet on the ground. “Listen, kid. We don’t have all day. If you don’t answer us, we’ll have to use more … convincing measures.”
The question reverberated so loudly in David’s mind that he flinched from the shock. Lord? Of course, I do. He hung his head in shame. It’s me that’s the failure.
David frowned as he pondered what God could possibly mean. He absentmindedly clutched the leather pouch attached to his belt and felt the stones inside. My sling! Of course. If he could hit a tiny olive hanging on a branch, then he could certainly defend himself against these terrifying robbers, especially with the Lord by his side.

The thieves tramped closer to the wall, and David responded by grabbing his sling. One of the men stepped in front of the entrance and promptly received a stone in the face, hitting him with such force that it knocked him out cold. He collapsed to the ground with a loud thump.
“You just made a big mistake.” The fury in the other robber’s voice was palpable. Avoiding the doorway, he marched up and down the length of the wall, assessing the situation. The sudden bang of metal hitting stone made David jump. The pounding echoed off the rocky hills for a long distance.
Initially, the wall held firm, but under the constant hammering, it slowly gave way. Before long, a steady stream of pebbles and stones was cascading to the ground, and a pomegranate-sized hole appeared.

David watched the scene with growing apprehension. His courage of only a few moments before had melted away like snow in the bright sun. He squeezed his sling – hard – and swallowed. His shoulders drooped.
David reflected on the words for a few seconds, then stood up straight. He would listen to God instead of his fears. Watching the hole grow bigger, he patted the stone in his hand. His eyes narrowed.
David rushed to the entrance, but the big bulking shepherd beat him there. With little effort, he lifted the boulder out of the way.

For the life of him, David couldn’t figure out what the prophet wanted, but he was sure of one thing: it couldn’t be good. As he approached the designated location, he felt as if heavy sacks of barley were attached to his feet, and he could barely take a step. His breathing became labored. He worried his heart was about to rip away from his rib cage since it was beating so fast. Sweat poured down his brow.
He spotted his brothers and father standing next to the prophet, but no one was speaking. An eerie silence hung over the place. He shuffled forward and stopped at a safe distance in front of
